Honestly this may be a love or hate anime. Each category (barring sound/music) can either be a turn on or turn off for any given person.
Obviously, I fkin loved each and every moment of it.
-one thing before i begin: About the ecchi. Please. For goodness sake don't skip watching it just because it has ecchi. Yes some parts are borderline hentai but please. Soon after 5 or more episodes you'll find it natural and not that bothering anymore. Don't act like almost seeing tiddies will distract you from what an awesome anime this is (unless you some horny 12 yo that is then fap away)
-long review below - Last Overview section is a hyper condensed TL;DR if you want that
-time for section for section breakdown
!!! Recently, there has been many visually pleasing animes by either Kyoani, ufotable, and A-1. My eyes have gotten so used to these "realistic" or "insanely detailed" animations that I kinda... lost feeling for it. Now I look at "mediocre" animations styles and I'm like meh the story better be good shit, since they are either lacking in talent or budget to be able to imitate the top dogs at animation. No creativity in animation(everything is too good basically) these days is the TL;DR for this section.
Somehow Kill La Kill and studio TRIGGER defies this at any given time I guess. They basically go "fuck the norm" and pull off whatever the fuck their minds can conceive. Which was a great ass breather for me. So thanks KLK.
>Story: yea ok this was slightly lacking. too simple for some in fact. But hey each to their own. I felt that this show wanted a basic premise that could be easily twisted around. And it did exactly that. Taking the revenge plot on a wild ride. Subplots weren't the deepest or most interesting shit but everything still kinda built on each other. Character dev. is a bit lacking for side characters tho hence the 8/10
>Art: hell ya. I practically watched this show for the goddamn animation style. This animation series has its heart and soul combined with its out of the world animation. As the characters say, nothing makes sense and thats what's special. Some of the things they do in KLK just aren't possible in those hyper realism animes these days. Instead of imitating IRL, it seeks to further it's own domain of art, anime. There are things you can express in anime that just defies any logic of real life. And that's good. KLK exploits this to the max with all their perspectives and fourth wall breaking.
>Sound: 10/10. I swear if you haven't heard KLK's soundtrack you missing out on a lot. My man Sawano making everything fit together perfectly with all the drops at the transformations. Also, each characters distinct theme can be heard each time they enter the screen. This really reinforces certain actions with certain scenes, kinda like how you hear Imperial March and you see Vader strolling towards you.
>Character: Each character has such unique character design. With Mako being like a comedic schoolgirl, her looks are distinctly different from Ryuuko. Each character's design in either looks or clothes amplifies their very personalities and again this is in stark contrast with "realistic" animes.
>Enjoyment: I think 90% of show I had either goosebumps or a smile on my face. Goddamn "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?" for real, each scene was animated for maximum enjoyment whether its supposed to be fighting or comedic, everything was great.
>Overall: Some people might hate the ecchi, some may hate the art, and some may hate the story. Sometimes though, I feel like some animes are to be watched with your feet kicked back and relaxed without analyzing each and every frame. KLK won't make you question "What is life?" or "What is human morality" afterwards, but sure as hell it's gna leave a big ass smile on your face. :)
