Recovery of an MMO Junkie was just what I needed for a light and fluffy anime to clear away some mind cobwebs of the darker shows that I had been junking out on. Stories about MMO players can be a hit or miss for me. Mainly that they miss out on the human experience of the characters. Maybe an odd thing to say for shows focusing on people playing games in an online world, but it's true. One of my favorite Dramas out there happens to revolve around online gaming and it's true strength is from it's characters. It was a treat to realize that Recovery of an MMO Junkie was such a story.
Moriko Morioka (AKA Mori Mori) is a refreshing female lead. She's a woman who has had it with her horrible job and dealing with the stress of the living in the real world. She just doesn't give one iota anymore and is entering the world of being a NEET. She's just gonna play games all day and find her bliss. I think the best part of this drama is how it handles Mori Mori's (I just love that nickname!) fears of social situations and anxiety of dealing with people. It's realistic which is so refreshing as anime tends to take this subject to crazy places where it becomes something of a trope. Even so is that she's still a positive person and wants to give her all. A nice touch!
Moving on to address tropes that are clearly here, such as the male and female leads connections and meet queue. Even going as far as to having them have met before the current story line. Many characters are ones we've seen before and know well. Still they're so well fleshed out and interact wonderfully I can't begrudge it. There's a lot packed into this story and it does a great job with what it's doing. Timing, it's all well played out.
The artwork for me was lovely and I loved the adorableness of the online game. It fit the story so well. While I wasn't blown away by the music it was decent and fun as well.
This was such a treat for me! The nuances to the story and the cast of characters were so much fun. This is one of those romances that builds up and makes you cheer joyfully. The pacing of the story and time frame is so well done. The last episode felt like a cheat as it is a happy ending, but teases us. Don't get me wrong the weird online dream was hilarious! However, how dare they tease me with the hot springs trip and deny it to me. Still a better ending than most anime.
