Hyouka (Anime) add (All reviews)
Jan 18, 2018
Preliminary (2/22 eps)
This was such a disappointment. Seriously, I had SUCH huge expectations about this anime and then...2 episodes in I was either yawning or twitching because of many reasons.
I'll keep this review short, simple and spoiler free: my beef with Hyouka is all about the plot and a single character.

Let's talk about the plot first: an apathetic student is good at solving useless mysteries. This poor dude is unexplicably forced to show off his skills because a girl is "curious" about those mysteries and he can't resist her pretty face (and pushyness).
That same girl also asks him a favor, and I won't go into details, but she asks something completely unreasonable (he's a teenager, not a policeman!) and personal. Let's not forget that this all happens in the first two episodes: they're basically strangers. She has no reason to trust him and his skills and he -someone who is CONSTANTLY saying that doesn't like to waste energy- doesn't really have a reason to say yes.

So, now I think it's kinda obvious which character irritated me so much: Chitanda. This useless, needy girl who's apparently incapable of solving the mysteries she likes so much by her own. During the first two episodes she bats her eyes, drags the dude around and keeps forcing him to observe clues and never gives two shits about what HE wants, even when he's vocal about it and clearly states that he's not fucking interested.
By the way, these characters are all in a club. A LITERATURE CLUB. Not a "let's play detectives!" club. So her requests are even more preposterous and rude. Ugh.

I get it: she's supposed to be the one who makes him do something, since he's the main character, but that's not the way to go about it, at least in my opinion.
