Valkyria Chronicles is set in an alternate Europe around 1940s. With the timeline, it’s obvious that the overall theme will be World War 2-esque. This means that the primary target of the anime are either military & dieselpunk fans or those who have played the game. The sad reality is, it’s neither packed in combat actions nor gives us ‘fanservice’ (not ecchi panty shots and the others, but as in we could see more of our favorite character development outside of the game and see him/her got more spotlight, etc). So all in all, this anime can be considered a flop in its execution but still, it has potential if it was done in another way (like making it slice of life in the military base or comedy rather than the usual melo-war movie that is plot-focused with a little bit of romance).

Here we can see the five main characters and also the ones who hog the entire spotlight on them. We have the power-hungry demagogue Maximilian, the devout servant because of lifelong obligation Selvaria, the ditzy genius Welkin, the girl next door Alicia, and the womanizer but at the same not empty-brained Faldio. The other characters are simply side-swept with the occasional highlighted in the filler episode after a tragedy and maybe an arc like Rosie and Isara. But other than that, the focus returns back to the five-O. What’s redeeming though, is that the character varies a lot and there are several of the somewhat rare types in anime like Jann.

The colors present here are mostly pastel and dull which gives us the impression of experiencing a fantasy yet tragedy-engulfed world. This is great in theory but the longer we watch, of course the more dull and boring it gets. Both 2D and 3D are okay and there’s only a few of the awkward movements.

The VA did a good job and suits their role. The soundtracks aren’t too memorable but at least that means they’re also not annoying. In the version of VC in which I watched (Coalgirl), the OP and the ED were not present until the last two episode so no comments. This might be special in my case because of I've only recently downloaded ep 25 & 26 yet the other 24 episodes had been downloaded for like two years ago

Personal experience here, take with a grain of salt; this is by far the anime in which I took a very long time to finish it. I’ve played the game (only for several hours though) and become interested it in so I decided to look at the anime hoping that it will satisfy me more. I started watching in December 2015 up until episode 12 and then took a long hiatus until it is already almost one year (end of November or Early December 2016) before I pick it up for 6 more episodes and then it’s back on-hold. It’s until now, May 2017 that I manages to finish the whole 26 episodes (not including the 10 OVAs). Looking at my record in watching animes, either I binge-watched an anime in a period of one day to one week, or watch it by batches of 3-6 episodes per seating and then took around 1-2 months to finish it. But this anime is a record-setter with a whopping ~17 months to finish. That may tell us a lot that this anime is both disappointing and boring. The concept of the universe was great (like in the masterpiece game) but the execution of this anime gone very awry. Could’ve take a different concept or genre and give a lot of characters spotlight and specials rather than making a plot-focused anime while the game itself already has already had the story.
