Preliminary (18/25 eps)
I honestly cannot understand the high ratings in regards to this anime. The concept and story were enticing at first and the first episode does a good job of pulling the viewer in...but about half-way through the series falls flat. The story loses its traction about halfway through as well and becomes so convoluted that its almost laughable to think you were first watching a story about a guy who was mysteriously transported from Japan to a fantasy world. However, my main gripes with this series is not the story, but the main character - Subaru.

This character has to be the most frustrating main character I've had the displeasure of watching. He seems to be the perfect candidate for character development at the beginning of the series, someone you feel will grow and become a full fledged character by the end - but he actually declines as the series goes on. His attitude does not change and instead of becoming a serious character that you'd like to root for, I found myself questioning his words/actions/thoughts throughout the entire series. His demeanor is better suited for a comedic relief rather than a main protagonist that a series should revolve around. It was actually sad to see how pathetic his character really was. He's self-centered and though I thought it would be a breath of fresh air to have a protagonist that is not overwhelmingly OP, he is even more unreliable than one would think. He has many other characters believing in him and yet all he does is think of his own selfishness and disguises it as looking out for others. The attempts at "shocking" episodes are even mitigated because of the main character's ability - in a sense, it's hard to even empathize with situations that come up because you know the main character could simply change things if he wanted to. But the most frustrating thing about it is that the Subaru is so useless and unreliable that common sense solutions to the challenges he faces are not even registered in his thinking.

All in all - decent story with the potential to be great, solid art and sound, but a laughably pathetic protagonist sinks the ship and makes the series hard to watch. Even with a "resurgence" 3/4ths of the way through the series, it was not enough to save the series for me.
