Summer Wars is a movie that caught me by relative surprise. I didn't even realize it existed until I saw it on Netflix days prior to me watching it.

The story is compelling, yet easy to follow. It doesn't over-complicate itself. Another plus is that the movie starts quickly, it doesn't waste a second of its runtime. The message the movie sends is that of family. The story is by far what makes this movie special. It maintains a strong message while sprinkling comedy in, as the viewer I really appreciate it.

The art is my single knock on this movie. It's from 2009, and it shows during the barrage of 3D models while inside the simulation/social network. While it isn't horrid, it's distracting. It seemingly gets better as the movie goes along; however it still leaves a lot to be desired. It feels distinctly low-budgeted, which is unlike Madhouse. The 2D artwork helps to make up for the 3D; it's smooth and clean. However, it's hard to overcome the poor 3D which is on display for 1/4th~ of the film.

The sound is excellent, everything I've come to expect from Madhouse and Funimation. It really pulls you into the scenes. The music could draw emotion on it's own accord, combined with the story it is pure bliss.

The movie introduces plenty of characters, perhaps too many. However, it isn't necessary to remember most of them, you won't lose any enjoyment if you can't. The characters create a lively environment, exactly how characters should. While certain characters fall into the "generic" category, they don't take away from the story and are not bothersome. The characters are nothing to gawk at, but they hold your attention and are certainly interesting enough to tell good story.

Of the Mamoru Hosoda movies I have seen, Summer Wars was my clean-cut favorite. It's a very fun watch, and is suitable for all ages from my perspective. It's funny with a meaningful message. While this movie probably won't be the best movie you've ever seen, it won't fail to leave you feeling satisfied and ready for more.
