What Re:Zero kara hajimeru isekai seikatsu wants to be? Personally Im not that sure. At times it seems like it wants to capture the dreadfulness of being forced to deal with being revived to deal with hellish scenarios every time you die but it fails at this not only is Subaru edgier than Kirito, but he is much more pathetic and utterly unlikeable. Towards the end the series degrades into mess of fantasy cliches, skits and pure edgyness. So where did the series fail? The over arching story is alright, nothing new but still decent, better than your average harem fantasy. I could even forgive all of the characters with plot tool abilities and "that" object which Subaru uses as stupid deus ex machina esque plot tool. But the real down fall of this series is in my opinion poor characters. Subaru is just so stupid at times that you want to claw your eyeballs from their sockets and stuff them into your ears to not hear the stupidities this mc spouts. Subarus ability named return by death makes literally 95% of the deaths redundant and replaying the same events over and over again becomes tedious for the watcher. Subaru is pathetic, stupid and dense the only way he gets anything done is by getting to redo the events as much as he needs, this woulsd not be so bad if Subaru would not be so unlikeable. He cries a lot and not in a 'decent way' hes bratty, dense and cringy, I know that some people can relate to this type of character but it says a lot imo that even Shinji seems excellent mc compared to him.. And Shinji was made unlikeable deliberately. Now we get to the other main characters and supporting characters, the biggest problem with most of the other characters is that they 1. dont question Subarus actions enough just for the sake of plot which is very bad in psychological series or 2. they seem kinda hollow, cliched or lack substance/have 1 quirk. Towards the end the series is filled with edgy "plot twists" that do not add anything of value to the story and awkwardly explain some characters quirk or something. And lastly the series is filled with horrible cg and shoddy animation which tells me that it was rushed with low budget. In conclusion, promising premise with awful execution and bad writing.
