Re:Zero is the story of a young 'Subaru-dono' who is living his life in an alternate universe. First of all i'm a kind of guy who gets psyched up whenever i come across a story that involves time travel or alternate universe plots. I just love em. So when my friend recommended me Re:Zero, i started watching it avidly.
Now lets see. About the story I rate it 7/10. Re:Zero starts off with a great premise, with Subaru teleporting to some other world where things are a hell lot different. His gaming instincts tell him that he has somehow been summoned to a fantasy world of a RPG game. He roams around in the sandbox environment in order to collect information. He quickly learns that he has no special powers and unlike the overpowered Kirito he is a useless jackass. He finds trouble soon enough while roaming in dark alleys, as a gang of robbers surround Subaru. Just as the goons seem to be overpowering him a beautiful girl from nowhere appears asking (rather demanding!) for directions. Of course she also saves Subaru from the goons out of pity for the weakling guy. Lol.
From here starts Subaru's real life in the new world as he decides to help this girl,
(Okay, the girl's name is Emilia, but dont get shocked if you hear something different at first) just to repay the debt of saving his life. He befriends her and tags along with her as he has no other purpose in life. Soon he finds out about his 'Return By Death' power which is nothing but a Big reset button on Subaru's life in this world. This being the introduction, this anime then takes turns that will make sure to overwhelm you in the greatest ways possible. It takes you on a ride where you smile at the blossoming romance of these two, where you cry (literally) at Subaru's misfortunes and gasp at the amazing action sequences this anime has. By the way if you are thinking that Re:Zero is some sort of feel good romance anime ill definitely ask you to back off. Its one of the most immense animes i've ever seen. The feeling of hopelessness and sadness had gripped me hard more than once or twice as i watched Subaru struggle. It Will make you feel like how many hardships really can a person endure without going insane. That's the kind of anime Re:Zero is. But it does not in any way leaves you scarred or anything. Later on in the anime you find a stronger Subaru standing alongside Emilia who has learnt the lessons of life the hardest way possible. But even saying so much about the story, in the end i felt like it could have been more elaborate. Some more clarifications that should have been in the story are missing. Also i kinda felt that the way the anime started it could have done better with the plot, by not making it repetitive and adding more elements apart from the 'return by death and correct scenarios'. But then again that's my personal opinion and every story is unique in its own way. But still its a very different kind of anime you must watch this season.
Also i quite liked the music that kind of blended along with the tale. The opening and ending tracks were nice as well. The animation is decent and colorful. The characters are well placed and scripted. Overall a good anime. If you are prepared to watch it, definitely watch it. It will make you feel satisfied, but a part of you will also crave for more episodes and more of Subaru-Emilia scenes together. Or maybe more of Subaru-Rem scenes together. Upto you totally.
