Starts off really darn strong establishing its characters quite well and having a solid thematic feeling, the relation to the through process which is similar to that which arises when playing Dark Souls (keep dying and trying to achieve a goal) and its effect on Subaru really made this above the usual anime par. However post episode 13 the quality begins to drop off, particularly during the White Whale arc the animation was noticeably uninteresting given the action on the screen.

Show neglects Emilia within the second half -1 point
Show brings Rem into focus instead +2 points

I noticed throughout the show, particularly near the end the visual imagery didn't match up well with the feeling which should have been conveyed. i.e during the initial fight against the White Whale the sun was out, removing the visual tension the darker imagery conveyed earlier. It is this disregard for visual imagery and use of more time-relevant visuals which really killed a lot of the experience, I can understand this somewhat, as the world keeps going on even when Subaru dies over and over. However the visual imagery throughout the first few episodes particularly show what I wanted with the visuals of the show in regards to the emotions it should convey. Overall the animation and visuals was pretty mediocre.

The ending while being somewhat satisfactory, was quite annoying given the whole scheme of the show, many potential things are disregarded. A second season is needed to bring the show back to what its initial impressions conveyed, if one is made this show has very large potential to bring itself up to an 8 or a 9 if it continues the tensions and intrigue around The Witch, The Witch's cult and Emilia, and manages to delve a bit deeper into some of the currently neglected characters.

Overall the characters are reasonably good, there is an extremely large cast and I question the necessity of its size, luckily the return by death mechanic does allow far more development of characters and it is my hope that in a potential season 2, the characters are balanced better, I believe that the show grouped many characters and doesn't deviate from this, I would like to see may more of the characters interact with some others, at the moment there aren't too many different interactions although it is still passable. It is the depth of the characters which really saves this show, however there are may characters which need more treatment, one of the largest mistakes was favouring Rem far over anyone else within the show in the second half, its great to have such intense character depth and development, but a lot was taken from other characters who could have used that time, also the Rem memes are kinda shit.

In general Re:ZERO was quite interesting, it has its flaws and I do not believe it is to the level the community keeps praising it with. It has a lot of potential for more depth which can be done well with a second season. If one does come to fruition I can understand the few shortcomings of this season as they would make a bit more sense.

Re:ZERO was pretty gewd.
