I can't say this anime was original, but it certainly had a new way of presenting ideas as old as religion itself. The storyline was all over the place, but the way it came together in the second half was very pleasing. Many parts were painfully cliche and repetitive, but overall, I enjoyed the thrills, action, and unfolding of the show. Unfortunately, the ending had to go and spoil all of that for me. I guess I am pretty picky when it comes to these sorts of things, but this ending really ticked me off. This anime was lacking in terms of character development for anyone except the select main characters, and generally, the cast of characters was a lot bigger than it needed to be, leaving many characters with little to no purpose. To be honest, I couldn't really bring myself to like any of the characters much, either. However, the characters played their roles extremely well. Mostly all of the characters contributed their pieces to the overarching story, and contributed to the moral as well. The theme of Guilty Crown was very moving. This anime demonstrated human loss, suffering, and consuming passion, but also humanity's ability to accomplish the impossible with its never-fazed willpower and determination. I found the romance in Guilty Crown to be overly tragic and sappy, to say the least. I'm sure other people have other opinions, but I couldn't stand the love story part at all. In terms of design and animation, this anime was beautiful. The animation wasn't revolutionary, but it was nice to look at, for the most part. Especially striking was the eye animation, and the animation of the weaponry, vehicles, and crystals. The fight scenes aren't the best I've ever seen, but they were still rather exceptional. There wasn't too much excessive gore, and generally, most of the scenes stayed PG-ish. That doesn't mean we avoided that typical anime shower scene, or those random clips we just didn't need to see, but it wasn't unbearable and it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the story. Overall, it was pretty good, but nowhere near life-changing.
