High School of the Dead is a pretty hit or miss anime in my opinion, some people love it some people don't. I personally though found it very enjoyable.

The thing people don't seem to get with this anime is while it has a serious concept it's not a very serious show and I love it the way it is. It's funny, well animated, has good action scenes, and some nice fanservice.
Now don't get me wrong, while the story isn't fantastic it has a great concept that I would honestly like to see someone else play out in a more serious manner. But this show isn't serious and it doesn't attempt to take itself seriously. Sure it has some dramatic moments and it does include some of the feelings of hopelessness you would expect from an apocalypse which is a nice touch. Still overall the series has fun with itself, and takes most of it from a comedic standpoint. With guns, boobs, and zombies flying everywhere your in for a fun watch.

Story:
As I mentioned before this series has a good concept and I honestly watched this not expecting much. I personally never thought zombies in anime would work but I was pleasantly surprised with how they pulled it off. At times it does a good job at capturing the classic zombie vibe, and the rest of the time it doesn't show that side that's mainly because that's not what it's trying to portray at the time. It's a show that typically leans towards comedy and while it can have a good atmosphere it also is willing to leave the seriousness behind, pull out a few guns, and throws some insane fanservice on the side, which is just a lot of fun to watch. The comedy which is enjoyable on it's own I personally found a lot more fun in the dub, it changed some of the lines just for fun, added a few references here and there, and the voice actors fit pretty well with their characters. Overall the story has a good vibe to it and can keep it when needed but it mostly leaves that behind and just has a good time with itself.

Animation:
The animation was pretty consistent and well done, but it mostly shined during the action scenes. I tell ya, you have to admire the amount of dedication these people have for jiggle physics. One pretty famous scene involving a bullet and pair of double Ds was better animated in that scene alone than some anime I've watched as a whole, it's awe-inspiring it really is. Even without the action scenes the animation was smooth and never seemed to drop throughout the series which I really appreciated.

Music:
I don't have much to say in this subject, the opening was pretty unique and very good in my opinion. The ending theme was also alright, not a must watch but I wouldn't mind watching through it. The soundtrack was also pretty decent from what I remember but bear with me on this it's been almost 2 years since I've watched this show.

Characters:
This show wasn't very long so it didn't have much time to go into everyone's backstory. Also considering it's comedic format character development was not really a main focus. Still the character's all had there own distinct personalities and traits except for the nurse, who overall was mostly pure fanservice and played the role of the adult figure of the group. Despite that though she never really took charge in the series and had the series continued I would have liked for them to add a bit more to her character.

Enjoyment:
Do I really have to say anything for this? As I mentioned before if your a guy than guns, boobs, and zombies, is just a recipe for a good time. I've already said many times how much I enjoyed the series, the comedy was good, the action scenes were fun to watch for it's combination of the insane increase in animation quality and the ridiculousness of the fanservice that never fully stopped at any point of the show. With the exception of outside scenes involving other people than the main cast. It was a really fun watch that I'd consider rewatching if I ever wanted to sit back and just have a laugh with a friend.

Overall:
I gave this show an 8 mostly because this site is very low on options with the scoring system. Great to Masterpiece seems like a big leap in my opinion and I might have given it that score had it not been just below the highest rank. It's a fun watch and good for what it is with a good concept and lot of comedy. For what it is there's not much more to ask.

That concludes my thoughts on the series if you don't mind a bit of gore and like a little action with your comedy I definitely recommend giving this a go. Still a good amount of tolerance for fanservice is needed because it can be a bit much if you're not into that kinda thing.

This is my first review so if the format or the style of it seems a bit sloppy I apologize.
