Guilty Crown, is a riddle to me. It tries so hard to be smarter than it really is, but fails so miserably that it's actually pretty tragic. It has some cool ideas, but ultimately falls flat by ripping off ideas from other anime, everything from Code Geass to Neon Genesis Evangelion, even one of the main characters, Inori, reminds me of characters like Rimi from Chaos;Head and Yuno from Future Diary. Speaking of characters, in short, they're unlikable. They fall into two categories: Bland, or Annoying. The main lead, Shu, manages to fall into both categories.
He's so whiny, self-centered, obnoxious, indecisive, he's basically the male version of Bella Swan, in fact, he's so whiny and obnoxious that he gives Shinji Ikari a run for his money.
The female lead, Inori, doesn't fare much better, they try to make her a love interest, but there's no chemistry surrounding it. Another thing that bugs me are the villains, I get that not all villains in fiction have to be morally grey, but these guys are just so boring. This show tries so hard to make them look menacing and evil, but it goes a little too far, not making me take them seriously, I mean, they're not even the charismatic kind of evil, they're just evil for evil's sake. The background characters aren't any better, either because they didn't have much screen time to develop, or because I just didn't care; except for this one girl named Hare, who I guess is supposed to be the love interest for the main lead, I mean, the chemistry is there, but she gets killed off near the end of the series, so I ended up not caring most of the time. As for the story, it's like that one movie Oblivion, except done 10 times worse; I mean, halfway through the show, it becomes plot twist overkill. But, it's not all bad, the music is done quite well, the OP, while generic, is a pretty decent song. The artwork is top-notch as well; coming from Production I.G., they know how to make cool looking robots, and to be honest, it's actually pretty to look at, from the setting to the character designs. The voice acting is serviceable, both sub and dub. And, in a few rare cases, I actually DID enjoy the show for quite a bit, until it a crashed and burned for another couple episodes.
Bottom Line: I did NOT like this anime, and if you did, that's perfectly fine. Seeing as there are MUCH better anime out there, I do NOT recommend this series, however, if you're just starting out, give it a shot, you might like it or you might hate it.
