The characters were mediocre, the story was mediocre, the sound was mediocre, everything about it was just eh.
What ReLIFE had going for it in terms of something new was that this 27 year old dude takes a pill to make himself look younger to relive his high-school days. But after a while they stopped even mentioning that or making it the prime feature of the story. They could have given the main character any type of backstory, and the anime would have stayed the exact same. That's how pointless that "going back in time" part was. They hardly mentioned it in great importance throughout the story.
After the anime threw out that novel idea out the window, it just ended up being a slice of life, kind of drama kind of romance kind of comedy type show. But instead of focusing on any one of those categories, it instead tried to mosh it all together and now you don't know what exactly you're looking at. The drama was very weak, like how one character is competitive and is jealous that someone took her spot for student representative for her class. But instead of leaving it at just a mediocre drama and sort of a side thing, they blew it up out of proportion and tried to make something of it. And that wastes about a good half of the series.
The same goes for other aspects of the story. The romance doesn't go anywhere far and actually just teases you. The comedy was humorous but nothing new, granting you a giggle every now and then. But honestly that's it. Everyone on MAL is praising it to high heavens and honestly I don't know why. This show ended up being a badly made mediocre type slice of life show with a slightly novel idea that they decided to throw out the window. I found no enjoyment in the show in any regard because it didn't feel as though they knew where they wanted to go. They didn't know whether to be a drama a romance or a comedy or maybe they wanted to be all of it but either way none of the those aspects of this show really went there for me.
