ReLIFE (Anime) add (All reviews)
Jul 23, 2016
The Slice of Life genre is something that has been done to death to the point of becoming cliche and riddled with hackneyed premises. Put a bunch of generic characters in a school, make them deal with the everyday pressures of school and life, and you've got yourself a franchise. Now comes the show ReLIFE, giving a new spin on an old topic and combining it with some of the best character depth I've seen in an Anime.

The story is loaded with infinite possibilities. But rather than give you the expected humor resulting from the premise of a guy who is given a pill to make him look younger and then goes back to high school for a year, the show gives you some genuine human moments with genuine human beings. They have strengths, flaws, struggles, little quarks, and likeable qualities that make up a real life person. Not to say there isn't some chuckles to be had with the "fish out of water" moments that unavoidably occur. Those aside, the show is pretty funny on it's own.

To add to the great characters, the show has a very positive message. To live life to it's fullest. To enjoy each day and each moment as much as possible, for this life and all that comes with it, is fleeting. It's something that spoke to me and I think most people would love a do-over for some point in their life. The art is pretty good. The music is very minimal. Just some keys on a piano here and there. But the quality of the characters is the real gold here. So many S.O.L. shows just load up with the same old cliched characters. This one put some real effort into things and created something that feels real.

This show is one of the highlights of the 2016 class and I enjoyed it greatly. I highly recommend it. 8/10. Check it out.
