Mixed Feelings
Kyoukai no Kanata in a sense sticks out like a sore thumb when it's compared to other Kyoto Animation works. It's not the fact that there's action because there was action in Chuunibyou and it still fits. To many, people love Kyo Ani for stressing points in everyday life and making them beautiful. That's more of a personal thing but there's more.

Story: The general idea of killing youmu was honestly one that I could get used to. It made sense how it connected Mirai the other characters. However, the romance between Mirai and Akihito seems forced especially if you think of Mirai's main objective which I will not spoil. All I really wanted was a little more development. And even though this series is only 12 episodes, I've seen studios develop their characters more in this amount of time than a series with 50 episodes. And to top it all off, there was an irrelevant episode which was just an excuse to let the cute characters sing and dance.

Art: The fact that Kyoukai no Kanata is a Kyo Ani anime is enough to know that's it's gorgeous. The color palette they used is very mellow but can also pop out in action scenes because of all of the shades of red they use. But that's it. Whenever I think of this show, the first thing that comes to mind was"It was really pretty" which is good in anime, but shouldn't be your selling point.

Sound: The opening theme of Kyoukai no Kanata was honestly dramatic and mellow enough to be fitting of a show that's supernatural and slice of life. The ending is competing with the Kiznaiver ending for my favorite of all time, and the soundtrack was lovely.

Characters: The characters is what I really have a problem with. After completing this series, I can easily say that I found Akihito to be more interesting than the main protagonist, Mirai Kuriyama. Other than the fact that she was this cute megane girl who had a very cool weapon, I don't remember much about her. Akihito Kanbara and his friend, Hiroomi Nase are still kind of off. It seems that as time progresses, less and less anime have unforgettable characters. I've watched anime years ago and I still remember the personalities of side characters. Hiroomi is basically just some other supernatural guy who has a sister complex. His sister, Mitsuki, I found even more boring.

Enjoyment: Watching the show was nice for my aesthetics, however , I found myself wanting more. So it was a somewhat bland and dare I say, "unpleasant" experience.

Overall: Kyoukai no Kanata was expected to be Kyo Ani's first dark anime but ended up falling flat on its claim and at sometimes could turn in to pure moe blob. The show isn't particularly bad, it was just disappointing despite its potential. if you're looking for a show about a cute girl fighting, then this one is for you.
