GATE is the quintessence of parody, everything from the main characters to the universe beyond the gate and the story is exagerated. Here we see the Japanese SDF as the invading "barbarians" of the Empire that ressemble a lot to the ancient roman Empire who was also destroyed in 476 by barbarians (I simplify it, it's actually more complexe than that). I believe that the world beyond the gate is actually a copy of the 'real world', there is many details in the background to make me think that but I'll let you watch it so that you can understanding it. Not only that but the modern Japanese society is also exagerated, Itami being an Otaku and having a bad reputation before being enlisted in the JSDF, and throught it the entire modern societies.

On a technical point of view, the sound is very good especially for the modern weaponry, its even a breaking barrier with the fatansy world beyond the gate since it makes it even more realistic, a rifle will have the same sound as one in real life, same for the mortar or artillery. The art is simple, almost cliché in some of the character designs wich only help for the parody. The action is also well paced with 10 minutes of fighting and then move to a diplomatic or political situation with more dialogues or exploration.

Overall, I give it a 9 because I think some characters and relations should have been more developped, it's still very enjoyable and it's in my toplist of animes. Thus, I'll recommend to not take it seriously when you're watching it and think of it as a parody above else.
