The first season of Gate is interesing.

The story is quite original mixing nowadays military forces facing mediaval armies. As a passionate of militar armament, I mut say that this show is really accurate in terms of modern strategies. Every vehicle you see here is real and it is used by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF). BUT, you will not see action in every chapter. There is a lot of politics, negotiations and humor in the story (just like in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace). And I feel that a bit of nationalism is not bad... But here you can see the JSDF beating the American, Chinsese and Russian special operations, which is quite ridiculous. It is not a flawless story but definitely enjoyable if you are patient and/or if you are into modern warfare and fantasy.

In the other hand, the show gives us an spectacular animation. Two dimensional characters in sketchy background and three dimensional animated vehicles may sound awful... But it makes the show even more interesting to watch. For me, this aspect is just perfect.

The sound aspect is important when you are trying to make a modern day armament related show, and this show doesn't fail. Realistic sound effects mixed with the typical sounds you can hear in every anime (and we all love), BUT unfortunately in seems that they had no resources to work in sound quality. Old fashion stereo is not good when the rest of the series is in a HQ level of sound. The opening song is average, nothing you will remember when you finish the season; the real magic comes when the orchestral music starts to sound in the background while the JSDF is kicking asses in another dimension. From the Kanochi Nite theme, to a mix between opera and Richard Wagner's "The Ride of the Walkyries"... The music makes everything in this show epic and... Mhm... Badass.

The characters are the funniest element of Gate. The simple interaction between someone like you from this moder world and someone from a medieval famtastic world. The development is not much for the main protagonist, Itama, but it is very notorious in the rest of the cast. Every character suffers from the colateral effects of the war, so you will see them get over most of the bad situations in the series.

As I said before, Gate has many kinds of interactions... But they get boring sometimes and makes you cringe sometimes with the typical "let's go shopping and make publicity for Japan" scenes. Even so, the action is just a demostration of... Mhm... Badassery. The camera angles, the colors, the realism of how a medieval army would end in front of a contemporary army (spoiler alert: the get destroyed). The action scenes here are something you will watch more than just once.

Overall, this anime is interesting and a bit of an experiment that I really enjoyed. The last episode leaves you wanting more (and that's what you actually get). So, if you are into extensive dialogue added between action scenes, then this anime is for you!
