Pupa (Anime) add (All reviews)
Apr 11, 2016
It feels weird to write my very first review on what I'd like to call, one of the most disappointing shows I've ever watched. The title itself felt interesting and needless to say, it was a recommendation from one of my friends. I watched and tried my very best to find in myself some sort of appreciation for the anime but very unfortunately, I didn't. Regardless of how new I am in the world of anime, it was clear in my senses that Pupa would always be one to include in the list of worst anime.

Story - 2
The story revolves on the supposed struggle of two siblings as the older brother watched his younger sister become a flesh-eating monster and how their life became miserable after that. The story is decent at this part, as the premise was simple and can set the atmosphere for the series of events to come. The problem was how to develop the story and lay out the details of that struggle. I am that type of viewer who does not really care about how unique the story is or how interesting the concept of the anime is; what I want is for the anime to successfully tell me how things happened in a clear and artistic way. This is where Pupa sucked the hardest. The story was very sloppy and unclear, different events with no clear explanations were showed wihout creating any real difference in the main storyline, and jumps from one event to another were made with previous events left unresolved, not to mention that those events weren't foreshadowed in the first place. In fact, there was no clear resolution at the end of the story. That's what was most frustrating. It merely showed a bunch of moaning and biting and blood splatter and gross scenes which don't even make sense. If you look at the scenes assuming that you don't know the anime, you would notice that the foundation that connects the story is the fact that a girl has monstorus flesh eating powers and she has this sister-complex brother who would do stupid pointless things to protect him. It even felt like the story was written for the sake of the anime having a story. So basically, the premise was decent but it was utterly wasted.

Characters - 3
There was no character development, that's all. Based on the resolution of the story, the only personality prominent is the sister complex of the brother and the helplessness of the sister. Other characters which could have been significant and created an impact to the storyline were also wasted. The struggle of the characters meant nothing because they always "went with the flow" rather than puller of strings of the plot. However, am I the only one who finds Yume hot? But that does not change my view of the characters: WASTED.

Art and Sound - 4
Nothing to say about it, because I really don't care about it. Let me just say that the animation was inconveniently unique and the sound mostly consisted of blood splatter and biting and moaning sounds. However, it was decent enough to jive with the atmosphere Pupa is trying to convey.

Overall
Everything had the potential to be developed. I felt disgusted with the way they handled the rest of the show. It was shit, honestly.
