Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is a slow paced, light-hearted, fantasy anime which takes its time to delve into world and character building.

In the first 3 episodes we are introduced to the main cast and can clearly see how they fit into the cliché character tropes. However, as the story progresses you can see how they aren't just your run of the mill cast of characters. You watch them grow and become better people (and fighters). I would say the characters are one of the strongest aspects of this anime due to them developing largely over the 12 episodes, (although a couple are pushed to the sidelines). But when a significant event happens the anime makes sure to delve into how each character personally reacts allowing the viewer to have a deeper emotional connection to them.

Even though the anime is very character based its fight scenes and animation are done well. Each character has their own fighting style making it more interesting to watch. I personally think the backgrounds in this anime are beautiful and compliment the foreground very well as they have been done in a simple, pastel toned way. Never the less, the animation is mostly smooth but sometimes the quality lowers in conversation scenes.

Overall I gave Hai to Gensou no Grimgar a score of 7 because of its characters. I definitely wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but each episode introduces you to the characters more and helps you understand what they are going through, although it is slow paced it is a nice casual watch for any fantasy lovers.

There's hopefully a season 2 in the horizon because there are many plot holes but, they are most likely covered in the light novels.
