School animes are a dime a dozen, and there's no doubt that they've been done to death. You can argue that Azumanga Daioh doesn't bring anything uniquely new to the genre, and that is not entirely false. The important thing is what it DOES bring. Characters that are strong enough to carry the series through to the end, and a good sense of humor and fun that never feels forced.
The happiness of this series is infectious. I could start an episode in a bad mood after a bad day and find myself laughing and smiling at the end of the episode. In that alone I feel like the series is wonderful, it's what you want out of an anime of this nature.
