Mixed Feelings
You know, I really tried hard to give this show a worse rating. But at the end I actually really liked it. Maybe it was from forcing myself to sit through the entirety of Sahkugan no Shana or Zero no Tsukaima, but I really do prefer a mature, honest, realistic relationship. Asterisk War...I mean Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is actually fairly fulfilling and I think it was test to see whether this one or the same show with different plot points would win this season. That being said, the small female characters that couldn't possibly hope to win a real sword fight at least had a water power or speed or something to back up their power. There was a decent amount of realism with blood and such, and for a high school magic anime it wasn't half bad. It set out to do something, and it accomplished it, and left me wanting to see whether Kurogane can compete in the battle fest while still protecting his gf and sister. It was interesting to see the black and white art style used to freshen up an anime and give some life to the story. Being a long term martial artist I appreciated the backstory of Kurogane and felt that they actually tried to stop him without having some joke of a way to do it that would be easily foiled, and it didn't turn out that his dad was actually doing all this for his sake or something pitiful, he was actually a git and didn't want his power usurped. Anyways, I think I'd rather watch this than Zero no Tsukaima again, so despite being a total ripoff of a story, it was good.
