Japanese calligraphy is occupied by several young geniuses, masters and newcomers. Among them all, seishu Handa, a rising star of this closed world. He collects excellent prices and recognitions. So he has all, he is young, beautiful and talented. His problem? His arrogance and confidence. One day, when a gallery director criticize his work, Handa get excited and hit him violently in the face. The young man is forced to go into exile on a small island at the bottom of the deep Japanese countryside. This penance would have been for him a sort of spiritual retreat in order to give new artistic momentum. While it is a regular in the town and cities, he landed in a place more quiet, deserted. It will be invaded by kids, and therefore will not even work quietly, relax a while. The neighbors arrive unexpectedly, his house is considered as a playground ... Impossible to work.
In super rhythmic episodes we will discover new characters and what Seishu Handa will do to accomplish his aims and create his identity in calligraphy.

My thoughts:

The bet is successful here, especially the design: the characters are beautiful and the scenery too, everything is colourful and gives an atmosphere of constant good humour.

on the other hand, the atmosphere can also have very dark moments during the sensei depressions. The dynamism of the anime is a strong point and the funny parts too. Naru has a very important role in the comedy of this anime because it is the driving force, almost the main character. Naru is a little girl of 7 years, it is still in the paws of the sensei with his friends in the area. It is early, eager to see them leave, then befriends with them and discovers the joys of country life. He, who has lived for calligraphy, discovers the outside world and relationships with people. He becomes indebted to the generosity of people and gladly accepts to render services to the people always with a touch of humour because the situations and Handa’s reactions are often inappropriate. So we have here a very valuable life lesson without being judgmental. The serious side is also well highlighted, including Sensei’s introspection about his behaviour, his life and his artistic future. The range of character is important and each person is someone who really gives a unique charm to this story.

Finally, the ancestral art which is calligraphy is brought here from very light manner but we understand that practitioners have a real philosophy of life. Through anime/manga, it always manages to discover something from Japanese folklore, here is calligraphy but this very original way of presenting things is exceptional and barakamon is a crush for me!
