The story of Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun starts off with our adorable lead female protagonist, Chiyo trying to confess her love to this guy named Umetarō Nozaki .However, while nervously trying to do so, Nozaki mistakens her for a fan and gives her his autograph.

And you know why he would think that? Well, that’s because our male protagonist Nozaki over here is secretly a shoujo manga artist.
Now since in order to get closer to Nozaki she agrees to be his assistant and help him out with his work, during which Sakura learns more about Nozaki and also begins to interact with other individuals that also help him or serve as inspirations for his manga characters.

That’s basically the plot of the show and to it doesn’t sound that interesting on paper if you ask me. In fact, I started watching this anime in hopes that it will be a sweet and fluffy romantic comedy, but instead I got a crack like addictive comedy that makes me laugh till I wet my pants. And you may ask - is that better? Well in my opinion, yeah, it is!

Each and every character in this series is unique in their own way, even if some of them don’t get as much as character development as I wanted them to get. But, hey the anime is only twelve episodes so I’ll let it slide mainly because of what they lack in development they make up for it in their personalities.

First of let’s talk about the titular character Nozaki. Now, I hate to say this but I felt at first that he was this expressionless and boring dude. And I am guilty for assuming that based simply on his looks. However, as the series progressed the dude really does end up being spectacular and hilarious. Also, I love how one of the running gags in the series happens to be how Nozaki is so invested in being a manga artist that he has no idea how to have a normal social life. That’s quality entertainment right there!

Now, let’s move onto my two very favourite supporting characters Kashima and Hori. Now, Kashima believe it or not is a girl. I mean she is like what the host club would want Haruhi to be like. And that is a player my friends. Ah yes, Kashima over here is the prince of the school and all the girls go crazy for her. Now in life, you’d be like ‘heh?”. But, since this is an anime, it sure as hell some great entertainment.

Also, the tsundere of the anime happens to be a guy named Hori. And might I add, why the heck aren’t there more male tsunderes in anime? So, yeah I know this sounds wrong but you have to admit that you love it when this guy channels in the spirit of Shizou Heiwajima and beats the crap out Kashima. She should know by now that she shouldn’t piss this guy off. Like seriously just don’t!

And it’s a shame that these two didn’t get enough screen time, because their on screen presence is just phenomenal.

Then we have Mikorin, an actual red headed flirtatious guys that despite being a complete cheeseball is really a shy and sweet guy who gets embarrassed after he uses his dumb pick up lines. He is one of Nozaki’s friends and Nozaki’s inspiration for his female character Mamiko. He too is one of the reasons why the show works and he and Nozaki has an awesome bromance may I add.

Last but certainly not least we have got Sakura Chiyo. Now at first I wasn’t sure whether she’d be an interesting female character or not and thank god I was wrong. I am pretty sure many teenage girls can somewhat relate to her situation of being friendzoned.I know I can! Anyway, I really do adore Chiyo because she is really a beautiful, sweet, sincere, and artistic girl who happens to be shy hopeless romantic. Nozaki is a damn lucky guy that a girl like Chiyo has a thing for him. I mean come on, she is so worth cosplaying!

However, the that bugged me most about this show was the fact there was no romantic development between Nozaki and Chiyo. This is clearly labelled as a romantic comedy and I was disappointed that there wasn’t much romance as opposed to comedy. Now, this does not make the series bad but it really disappoints all those teenage girls and guys that wanted sappy confessions and passionate kisses. However, some like me might not even care that much about that because this show is awesomesauce none the less.

Then again, that definitely does not mean that Nozaki and Chiyo’s relationship doesn’t grow. I mean they do end up being close friends but we and by we I mean Chiyo wanted some goddamn romance!

The ending of the series really didn’t feel like an ending and this is what I hate about 12 episode animes because sometimes they can’t seem to wrap everything in a tiny little bow. The story was incomplete and I really hope the show will be renewed for a second season. I mean, it’s gotta happen!

Also, the reason another thing that took away from this series was Seo, who just didn’t appeal to me and I found her really loud and annoying. However, that’s my personal opinion and if you love her I can’t really hunt you down and take your soul.

Anyway, the animation for gekkan shoujo nozaki kun was amazing done because the studio made everything look so vibrant and colourful. I mean, the character designs are very well executed, not to mention how clean and detailed it is they look.

Now, I may the adore the show but I really want to talk about it’s opening. I mean, in my opinion it’s funny and awesome way to really introduce the audience to the series. All our favourite characters are present in the opening and the song is such an earworm. I mean the song is the type of thing I feel like dancing to after I come home after finishing my exams. But, I really do the dance inside my head because a three exam tends to drain my battery.

However, just listening to this song makes me all energized and alive. Reason why, I even bothered doing this review! Anywho, so after carefully analyzing this anime while desperately trying not to laugh out loud like Patrick Star. I have decided to give Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun an 8 out of 10. It is definitely one of the best 2014 offered and I really desperately want a second season for this show. Like please make it happen!
