While I was watching, I didn't have a solid sense of how I should be approaching this anime, or what kind of attitude to have. It is by all means a slow melodrama that often takes itself more seriously than it should, but there are scenes that feel like they simply do not belong in the show. All of the "comedy" that I can only assume to exist to lighten the mood, seems so far detached from the rest of the show.
It especially doesn't help to define the characters with any sort of nuance, they're pretty much one dimensional, and the the development is focused entirely on Kousei.
Much of the "development" of the other characters is in the large number of flashbacks.
The two main males take a lot of physical abuse from the females of the show, played for laughs, but because Kosei in particular receives a lot of not only physical but emotional abuse too, it simply doesn't sit very well.
The foreshadowing is quite heavy, so if you arent watching this mindlessly, most of the ending is exceedingly obvious, and the rest of it can be figured out with a little thought.

This work is more focused on the visuals and sounds. As you'd expect of a show revolving around music, the sound track and design is on point; no complaints.
But probably more impact for most viewers will probably not be the sound. In fact, much of the dialogue during performances is a sort of hand-holding for viewers who know little about classical music. There are many moments where the animation is stellar, and provides another analogue for viewers to understand what the musicians are feeling, though those are spelled out as well.
Overall the show was definitely something I enjoyed, despite my gripes with it. If I let myself get swept up in the melodrama, it took me for a great journey. And though I didn't like the ending they gave, I believe it was the only correct one.
