There's nothing original about a shounen series like this, but sometimes there doesn't have to be. It feels like a familiar sort of swashbuckling adventure romp (as a loose adaptation would) energized by the typical Power of Friendship that brings protagonists back together.

The presentation is warm and genuine, despite occasionally perverted moments, and mostly lacks the cynicism of edgy shonen protagonists - which is not to say the series is lacking in darker story beats. Themes of slavery, class divides and corruption/exploitation are interesting undercurrents that go hand-in-hand nicely with the characters and their stories. (Morgiana is a personal favorite)

That said, an arc consisting mostly of politics and a critical look at government systems (only occasionally punctuated by the usual sword and sorcery) felt like a bit of a slog that might miss the mark with some of its target audience. The show is at its best when it's just the three main protagonists on their journeys, encountering the menagerie of crazy henchmen and villainous Illuminati. Said arc isn't improved by the relative lack of comic relief throughout those episodes in comparison to other episodes - the tone seems at odds with the rest of the show and drags on a bit too long.

Overall nothing revolutionary in the anime space, but there's something to be said about a show as good-spirited as Magi. Bright and bubbly at its highs, there's not a lot that would really disappoint anyone looking into the adventure genre.
