When I first heard about Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, I thought “so now we have Rail Wars, Summer Wars and now Food Wars”. Food Wars sound more like a anime version of masterchef than a anime which will actually any sort of “war”. Annd I was right. Food Wars! is a deep and mature show about the production of food and the hardships that come with it and truly shows what our character are going through.. Oh wait that Silver Spoon not Food Wars l... Food Wars is Food ****

Food Wars is one of those animes which sounds ridiculous on paper, like Steins;Gate, people attach a phone on a microwave and time travel? But unlike Stiens;Gate this one is ridiculous and the anime knows this. This anime is essentially the polar opposite to making food in real life because making food in real life. The show is very over the top. There is this thing in anime where they make the most mundane task look amazing, both Death Note and Kaiji use this. But Food Wars! uses this technique of create the illusion that making food is much cooler than it really is. It really doesn’t take itself too seriously but this isn’t a flaw, it’s self aware. The Story of Food Wars! takes place when our protagonist’s father closes his diner to go around the world and sends his son to an elite culinary school where only 10% of the student actually graduate. Food Wars! feels like an action anime without any of the action. Literally this anime has everything to be a shounen battle series, ninjas, samurais, witches [Episode 21], the old evil mastermind, and the guy with pink hair and even Indiana Jones? [Episode 22] Oh wait, thats not anime.

The characters of Food Wars I must say are very generic, but done right. Unlike Seraph, where the trope defined the character, in Food Wars, the characters had more to them.
Our protagonist Yukihira Soma is the typical shounen character, overpowered, over confident. He is the type of character that never loses. He so arrogant that typically you would hate him but for some reason you don’t. He, like almost all of the cast, doesn’t show don’t have any character development. He is a completely flawed character which would break the show but he is surprisingly, he is quite a charismatic character who is enjoyable to watch.

Megumi Tadokoro, she is our shy and timid character of this series. She gets a lot development than Yukihira but her main role in any given episode seems to be there to show how great Yukihira is.

And finally, Nakiri Erina. She is the typical “I don’t want to admit that you are any good” character and I really don’t really see why so many people like her so much. She is so bland and boring but not only that she seems like a completely horrible person with the “I am so much better than you” type of attitude.
Though lovable at most times, our characters aren’t the best.

The animation for Food Wars! was done by JC Staff and was mostly really good with bright and vibrant colors being shown to us every second. The mangas really exaggerated nature was translated really well, when there is a nice fragrance there are these colors all over the screen. The artstyle of Food Wars! is very over the top and colorful and it definitely a pleasure to watch this show.

Food Wars came out this Spring and finished at the end of summer.
The first season come out this Spring, and hopefully will get another season.

For a show that is categorized as a comedy, I didn’t really laugh much. Whenever they try to make the show emotional or something it's not, it completely and utterly fails because I really don’t care.

This anime was my favourite out of all that came out this summer. It is so enjoyable, and has a similar feel to some of those older shows like Kenichi.
Food Wars was one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve seen in a long time and you should definitely check it out, it's a ton of fun but does have some apparent flaws so i give this anime a 7 out of 10.
