When I watch a show, I like to be critical, when I'm done even if I loved it I like saying it's a 9/10 because I like reserving the 10/10 for those few things that REALLY catch me (Cowboy Bebop, etc) and so when I finished this, I kind of just threw it into that category.
I really like it.
But now, I sit here in front of the glow of my laptop, writing this review and being given individual categories to rate... And I must say, this is a 10/10 show.
Ergo Proxy does something very similar to shows like Boogiepop Phantom and Serial Experiments Lain... REMOVES ALL COLOUR.
Not to the same extent but it's not exactly a nice colour pallet, and I think that this really compliments the show's atmosphere quite well.
The story is absolutely rich with backstory, and all the plot that it goes through is fairly ambiguous leaving lots of questions at the end. But not in the bad sense that it wasn't really wrapped up.
Lots of the questions you have at the end will be solved over time as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort to answer them on your own or rewatch the show. There is one flaw, if you can call it that. This show assumes you are not only a very intellectual person but also that you have enough time and can give enough effort into a show to watch everything that happens very VERY closely. Let me explain, whereas a lot of anime likes keeping a mystery until the very end and saying "It was me all along!" right at the very end, maybe having that character give a long monologue about how he did it all to tie up all loose ends, Ergo Proxy just leaves it.
But that monologue is truly the entire show, it hints at everything the whole way through. And that is why I love it.
The art is outstanding and I can tell this because of the fact that every episode I feel like my soul is being sucked from my body by the art alone (again, ALL COLOUR IS GONE)
The music is lovely, Radiohead is the ending soundtrack and the op just grows on you as you watch.
The characters grow quite well too, although I can't talk too much about them without going into spoiler territory (Oh another thing, you can look up NOTHING about this show, one small picture can spoil it all, so another flaw is that it takes a lot of devotion and care to not accidentally spoil it for yourself)
I enjoyed the show the entire way through, it kept me asking questions even after the very end and in a show like this, that's what's best.

I can see somebody not liking this, but give it a shot and try it out for yourself, you may just find a new favorite ;)
