This review is should best be titled as "A defense of School Days". I won't become an absolute apologist for this show don't worry, however I believe its reputation is undeserving in the internet community. As such I will go over points as to why School Days is not the worst anime of all time, rather an interesting piece and spin on the Rom-com harem genre.
I will get to the point of saying that on a constructive level School Days leaves much to be desired. Poor plot pacing, unimaginative characters, unexplored setting, the list could go on. The music was all together dull and I just skipped the OP and outro after two or three episodes. I would say about seventy percent of the running time of the show could be cut and the plot would still make sense, or at least relative sense.
Now with that out of the way we can focus on the characters. Our dear protagonist Makoto, hated and reviled by many. Sociopathic, lustful, moronic, these are all words that fit in one way or another. All words that fit for most of the show I must stress. The first few episodes have a rather tame Makoto, who devolves into a sort of horrific character. I will however praise his attempts to rectify his mistakes. I found it abhorrent how people found his death satisfying and deserving. Makoto tries to amend his ways. the final episodes has him making a commitment to Katasura. He did foolish things and he is remorseful for them. His attempts to resolve things with Sekai however, ended in failure. Simply because she couldn't stand having done to her what she had done to others.
In a way this became a Defense of Makoto. Space is limited so I will give these parting notes. If you want to watch an Anime that has realistic consequences to actions, this isn't it because Makoto would have been dead long before he was killed in the show. All in all however it is no where near the worst anime ever, and I think School Days should be seen for the legendary, albeit notorious status that has formed around it.
