As I just watched BTOOOM! about 3 years after the initial episode, its premise is actually a common theme of most series. Yes, about a NEET that is somehow trapped in a situation where their life at stake. It's so common that I even need to think twice or thrice to take such a show because there's a common follow-up of the series. It become a comedy that forget how the pinch in their life and in the last episodes, the situation become so dangerous that make the episodes before is a summer breeze. And how about BTOOOM!?
BTOOOM! take a nice approach by using a survival game as its core, a common thing of how Hollywood action movie/series. But, it didn't forget that it's an anime by using a game and NEET theme. It's quite a good start. As the story goes, BTOOOM! take us to know how the game works, how the mechanism itself, and how the rule-I think it's important to do this as a survival theme because we can't just let a guy die without a reason, right? Too bad, there are several detail that's somehow is quite bothering. One of them is how the 2 years-NEET protagonist is somehow can do all the run and action with a good stamina. Though, I was indifferent about it after several episodes. As the ending come, I think once again that this show is really using Hollywood recipe of action movie. Win against an enemy, got a friend, a betrayal, then closed by a kiss scene with the heroine. And I think they brought it well.
I love how the character design made without using a moe-style too much. And that design is quite good to take this series seriously as survival theme. Though, there are several gap between design of a character to another. Next, I like their action scene even after they didn't use CG to do the bomb explosion. I actually expect some CG on the explosion, but a hand-drawn couldn't be said as a bad artwork. As a whole, the artwork is good.
The sound work isn't really notable. I feel the explosion of every bomb is same regardless of the power. The BGM is not that bad, but it's isn't good either to feel a thrilling from the tense situation.
The character is quite bad for me. How the character interact, their questionable development, even how a weird conclusion of a certain episode is still bothering me. Despite that, the development of the protagonist is good. Though at first it's questionable how he's a jerk, but I love how he has his own ideal to do a thing, how he realize how jerk he is and know the reason of it, it's good to see how his development in later episode is.
Overall, it's a good series. It's a good watch to see how a jerk become a hero and how the action scene goes with explosion despite a bad work on it. I would like to recommend this series to everyone who love an action with a good development on protagonist.
