Being a music anime, you've gotta like music. To like this show, you need to like 90's/00's rock music. Maybe something like Stone Temple Pilots or Pearl Jam. Even if you don't like those bands, you should still be able to appreciate the music.
This show shows how a band came together and became famous. Relatively simple, but still great nonetheless. While some plot elements felt a bit useless and often seemed to just fade away, the end result was still pretty good. That doesn't mean I don't have complaints though..
"I'm more used to speaking English than Japanese." Bullshit. Even the Americans in this show didn't know how to speak English...you know, except for the guy who said "motherfucker" every sentence..
Now about those references. Of course in a music anime they're probably gonna mention The Beatles and Sex Pistols, but they did much more. Guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, and Nuno Bettencourt (did NOT expect that one) were all mentioned. The Rolling Stones are often mentioned, Freddie Mercury is shown, and bands like New Order are mentioned (seems really out of place with the music they're playing, but still cool). If you pay attention to the dialogue, you'll find unexpected things like that.

This is a good show, but not everyone will enjoy it. You need to kinda like the music and/or be an aspiring musician to be able to appreciate it. Consider this before watching.
