Alright so a lot of you will discredit me after seeing my anime list, I watch a lot of shallow anime but I have enjoyed a few more complex ones. This was neither and did nothing for me, all hype.
Back to the hipster statement. True, kill la kill has retro art and retro fight scenes, but the people praising this anime are the people who want to be "that guy" who's into retro fight scenes. It is NO Gurren Lagaan, so stop. You may say I don't get it and I'm full of it this anime has everything, retro art and fight scenes, satire, action, comedy, sound, and whatever! But just because it has everything doesn't mean it's well done. I dropped it half way through just wasn't getting any enjoyment from any of its aspects.
Oh and that "accept your body" message that makes it so great? Ya, that could've been great if they'd done it better, but how they did it was like scribbling that "message" on a post-it note and slapping it on top of the fanservice.
This anime is a 3/10 wearing a ton of cheap makeup making people hype it to an 8 or above. Bite me.
