Romances in anime are not a rarity by any means, in fact there are so many every season that it becomes hard to get into them, as most are the typical slice-of-life comedies. But every once in a while you see a show that looks like it has a different spin to the genre, a twist that hooks by the heart, and reels you in to watch this tragic tale.... until you realize that the hook is the only thing that's really keeping you invested for a good portion of the show.

Plastic Memories has a lot of characters, and by characters I mean cogs in the machine, because that's the best way I can describe them. They really have no purpose outside of moving the plot forward while having their own quirk to make them stand out, barely. The only 2 side character that get any development are the characters of Kazuki and Asuka Lang.... I mean Michuru. (Come on, she's CLEARLY Asuka!!) But even then their characters go nowhere, a bunch of wasted potential.

That leaves our 2 main leads to carry the show, luckily they manage to pull it off. Tsukasa is your typical good person, always having a smile on his face while being a klutz. His general nice guy attitude was a tad annoying at times, but given what his character goes through in the story, you grow to appreciate it more. Then we have our main female lead, Isla, who is by far the best character of the show. Isla makes this show worth watching; she's cute, she's funny, she's quirky, she's clumsy, she's just a loveable presence. She's also the focus of the main plot of the show, which is a good thing since she's the most likable character. As for the plot itself... that's more of a mixed bag.

Plastic Memories is a 13 episode show when it should've been 24 episodes, because the world they create is incredibly interesting. There are multiple side stories that make up most of the show's arcs, and in them you can see a lot of potential for some really good drama... but all you ever get is that arc, leaving you feeling a bit underwhelmed. There is an uneven focus on different arcs, as one might have Isla getting closer with Tsukasa, but then it'll focus on a side character's backstory in the same episode, even though the focus should stay on Isla and Tsukasa.

Doga Kobo handles the animation and they handle it well. The show is full of bright colors and stylistic locations. Its incredibly bright during its lighter moments, and subdued during its darker scenes, overall a great looking show. On the music side of things we have Masaru Yokoyama as the lead composer and... I can't remember that many tracks by him. This unfortunately falls into the category of generic anime scores, only being there to fit a certain scene. With that being said there is a track during the final episode that was very touching and well made, but aside from that I didn't remember much music-wise.

Plastic Memories is a show that could've been so much more, but unfortunately fell short of its mark. That's not to say that the show stinks though, because it is very enjoyable to watch. I had fun watching Plastic Memories, despite a ton of flaws and missed opportunities. I liked it, you may hate it, or you may love it, watch it and find out.
