Berserk is not for the faint of heart. It is the definition of brutal in every aspect of the word. Having said that, I cannot recommend this anime enough to everyone. Although Berserk is not as highly acclaimed as its manga, it is still a brilliant show nonetheless. I would recommend anyone trying to get into the world of Berserk, to start here. Berserk starts off at the beginning of the Golden Age Arc, which I actually prefer compared to how the manga originally started. The Anime is a great set-up for the fully continued manga.

STORY:
Having dived right into Berserk, one of its strongest qualities is its story-telling. Very rarely have I seen such brilliant writing. The down-right disturbing backstory of characters, to the ambitions, and genuine good qualities made me fall in love with the cast. There was no doubt in my mind that once I finished the Anime of Berserk, that I would start the continued Manga.

CHARACTERS:
The main protagonist, Guts is a man who believes he has no purpose. Yet, he has goals, and strives to help other around him reach similar achievements. But in the wake of everything, he feels empty. His entire existence and strive to move forward is understanding who he is. Guts’ character struck me as a self-reflection of our being. His constant longing for purpose really questions what our lives mean. From his brutality to his kind-heartedness. He truly questions the definition of good and evil. Characters like Casca, Griffith, Judeau, and Corkus all play their important roles. They all feel real and the character development is a refreshment.

SCORE:
Music has always enhanced, and in my opinion, made or broke a scene. If the score is bad, it can cause pure confusion and disarray. Likewise, a brilliant score can express emotions that words alone cannot describe. The latter is what I felt throughout Berserk. Guts’ theme in particular is up there with the likes of John Williams and Nobuo Uematsu.

EXECUTION:
With a combination of plot, characters, and score. What brings all those together and create a masterpiece is its execution. Berserk definitely blows this one out of the park. Scenes in Berserk were executed so perfectly that I was at a loss for words. Towards the end of the show, I was literally brought to tears within minutes.

VERDICT:
To say that an Anime like Berserk is so brilliant, only for it to be a small chunk of the whole story. Gives you sense of how great this series really is. I cannot recommend it enough. It is a story that everyone should know. Berserk was executed so well, it is nearly perfect. To skip this series is a disservice to yourself, because what you will be missing is one of the greatest Anime’s ever made. Berserk gets a 9/10…
