Just finished watching this. I would VERY STRONGLY recommend anyone watching this.
(In fact, I just made an account here to post a review of this anime)
Yojohan Shinwa Takei (Otherwise known as "The tatami galaxy") manages to be humorous but meaningful and profound at the same time. The way it use of anime as a median is refreshing, in that it is unique and artistic, not at all derivative of other anime (A problem that I think lots of anime have) the art also goes very well with the themes of the show and the over all moral of the story.
Furthermore, Im sure anybody would enjoy this; whether or not they have prior context in anime. This is achieved in large by its incredibly well-constructed story, which is episodic, yet coherent, exposing sides of every character in a dynamic, puzzle-like way.
As I stated earlier, the use of anime as a median is more creative than anything I've seen before; I truly believe FUNimation were pioneers in making this. However, this artistic merit is not only limited to the use of anime as a median. There are many motifs constantly firing off in the background (And the foreground) made to act as visual metaphors, events that seem unconnected at first become clear foreshadowing devices once said foreshadowed event happens.
The tatami galaxy also had an EXTREMELY satisfying ending, every frustration and confusion the viewer experiences in the journey that is this show is explained, a conclusion is made and a very valuable (though slightly sugary) lesson is taught.
In conclusion, this one is definitely a must watch for anybody who likes anime. Though slow to start, the viewer learns to love the show for its subtle hints and nuanced intelligence.
Modest but brilliant!
