Without any other anime series to watch I bit the bullet and watched the first episode... then the second... and before I knew it, I realized I was watching the best show I've ever seen. That's right. Hands down, the best thing I've ever seen.
I was reading another review on this site, where the reviewer stated that they never shout at the screen or get completely absorbed in the story, until this anime. The same happened for me. Amazing story and characters. Inspirational. Some parts were so sad I cried.
This anime will inspire you. I've seen it several times. I try to watch it no more than once or twice a year so as not to ruin it for myself. Do yourself a favor and watch this anime. It's amazing.
I'll just say this for my final thought, this anime is so good it's depressing because it is hard to envision anything could be better than this anime.
