This has been sitting on my Plan to Watch list for a very long time. The time finally came to watch it. My expectations were actually pretty high. Did Wolf's Rain meet them? No. Absolutely not. This gets a 7, which coming from me means "okay". I was not expecting to be so underwhelmed.
This is my third anime that was an original work by Bones, the first two being Fullmetal Alchemist (the 2004 one, which is one of my favorite animes), and Darker than Black (which was excellent). I said in a previous review that original works by Bones have a certain style to them, a way that they build atmosphere, and Wolf's Rain has "original work by Bones" written all over it. And that is Wolf's Rain's saving grace. The atmosphere of this show is a very good one. The score is really good, and the score is often not even worth commenting on. The way that audio and visuals are used to say things without words is very striking. Sadly not striking are the characters, who aren't very interesting, or story, which isn't very interesting. There is a really good show somewhere in here, but there is not much to latch on to. Maybe if they worked hard to develop the characters (like they did in Darker than Black), or told a complex and thought-provoking story (like the one in Fullmetal Alchemist), this could have been something more. I am honestly hoping that things get good in the OVA. Otherwise the hype surrounding this show is unfounded. Things picked up toward the end of the show, but what I got from the 26 episode series warrants nothing better than "okay".
