First off this movie is long. Just under 2 hours and 42 minutes on KissAnime. Next, the music is absolute phenomenal. Beautiful instrumental music accompanies key moments in the plot. This music stands out, and it is wonderful. Next, I haven't watched the anime, but I was still able to follow what was going on and piece together the back story and setting from the dialogue and from my talk with a friend. If you want this movie to have the full impact, getting the back story from the anime or manga is required. However, if you don't plan on watching the anime or reading the managa, it's not a reason to skip this movie. The situation is cool, the character's are likable, and the choice the protagonist makes feels significant. Overall, it's a wonderful movie. I liked it so much I might actually watch the anime at some point.
