If you're like I was and have watched the first episode or two and just couldn't get behind it, I understand where you're coming from. Just please, for your own sake, learn to accept what you are having trouble enjoying.
This show is overall one of the greatest animes there is. It's definitely something that when it's finished you have to stop, look out a window, and put it all together. The significance is in the symbolism. It's not that it's overly deep or anything, but it does present a message however silly it may seem at the time.
I promise that this show is worth your while.
