For beginners, Nanatsu no Taizai may appear just another shounen-type anime out there, but what makes it standout is the battle scenes, the foreshadowing (although it's not used too much in the series, but the manga has an assload of it) and the entertainment value. For someone like me who reads the manga, I can say that everything is better when animated. But if you're like me who reads the manga, you probably felt a little disappointed for A-1 Pictures in removing certain important keypoints that quite messed up the series. So if you're an anime-only watcher, you'll never know how upset I am (but just a bit).
But if I were to ignore that fact, this series is really a blast. It's like something I have never seen before in a series. I last felt this when I was watching Soul Eater. The impact is there... only a little more intense. 24 episodes is just not enough, but I understand because it has came close to the latest chapters of the manga.
I just so love this series I have to write a review for it. This may be quite long, but I'll appreciate it if you read it till the very end.
Story: The infamous group of knights called The Seven Deadly Sins was framed for a crime they didn't committed. This caused them to scatter all across the country. Elizabeth, the Third Princess of Liones, decided to find The Seven Deadly Sins for the purpose of seeking their help to save Liones from an upcoming war. During her journey, he meets a bar owner named Meliodas, alongside his assistant, Hawk, which is technically a talking pig. When one of the Kingdom's Holy Knight came in to retrieve Elizabeth, Meliodas saves her and is revealed to be the captain of The Seven Deadly Sins, which he represents the Dragon's Sin of Wrath. Upon his revelation, he agreed to Elizabeth to find the remaining Sins. And thus begins an epic journey.
The story may appear cliche, but it has it's own uniqueness. It's like... reimagining and recreating the plot for a new and more wholesome storyline. I thus give it a 9/10.
Animation: 8.9/10, Why did I say so? If you have a keen eye for animation dirt, you can probably spot multiple dirt during the course of the series, but the epic battle scenes and awesome special effects makes up for it.
Sound: I just got to love every BGM used to the series because it all fits perfectly on every scene. I also have to mention the OP and ED's used. Ikimonogakari did a great job is delivering the first OP, "Netsujou no Spectrum" while I experienced LSS on the ED, which is a collaboration of 2 of my most favorite JRock groups, FLOW and GRANRODEO! They did justice to "7-seven"! Meanwhile, I cannot deny I was stuck in LSS too on the 2nd OP, "Seven Deadly Sins" by MAN WITH A MISSION, while the 2nd ED, "Season" by Arisa Takigawa delivered a smooth, sometimes emotional but powerful song for the current happenings covering the second half of the series. Yes, the sound is just so good! 10/10 for me!
Character: You just gotta love each and everyone. Each one has their own uniqueness and awesomeness. Take Ban for example. He may appear a jerk most of the time, but hidden under that persona is a truly caring person. King also has his spotlight. He may appear weak, but don't underestimate his powers. But my favorite among the cast would be Gowther, being the one who is always straight-forward about everything and keeping a straight face all the time, with his signature poses too. Everyone was awesome in their own ways, so it's a 9.5/10.
Entertainment value: It goes waaaaaaaaaaaay beyond 10. I'm serious. Cliffhangers? Yes, there's so plenty of them it makes me cringe. Battle scenes? Super epic. Interactions of the characters with each other. Always fun to watch and exciting. Meliodas and Elizabeth moments? Absolutely yes! Diane and King? A BIG YES! There's just too much about Taizai that I just can;t leave alone. So just for entertainment, I'd give it a 10/10
Overall: Despite having a quite messy storyline due to a lot of omitted keypoints, I have to give the series a 9.9/10. That's just how much I love the series, I just gave a mere 0.1% for my disappointment. I don't really take it to heart. Knowing A-1 Pictures, they could have given us a better anime series with a better adaptation. But what can I do? It's already over, guess I'll just have to deal with it. But nonetheless, I highly recommend it to everybody who's in for adventure, comedy, fantasy and a little historical. If I enjoyed it, you will, too.
P.S. Please don't compare it to Fairy Tail. I beg you. Those two are waaaaaaaay different from each other.
