Ill talk about my low scores first. Art: Shinsekai Yori is pretty to look at but nothing outstanding. I love the scenery. I don't really know what else to say because I am a poor judge for art. Sound: Great OST but many people may find the constant repetition of songs boring. It didn't bother me personally but I have heard that complaint. You will frequently hear a part of a symphony called From the New World (same title as the show) and I always enjoyed hearing the peaceful melody.

Character: Theres a lot of characters in this show but I ended up only caring about three. The protagonists are 5 young children that we see grow into adulthood (well only a few make it there) The characters that do end up not making it to the end did not receive enough plot development and you might even forget about them. The antagonist is perfect but I can't even name him because that would be a spoiler itself. If you're like me your suspicious of this character from the very start and you have your suspicions each them he makes an appearance. The story didn't necessarily develop him well but he was developed in a way that you almost can like him and that you can almost forgive his actions but in the end still hate him.

Story: The story at first is a bit plain. Another take of a utopian/dystopian society set far out in the future. You follow the lives of some village kids. The setting is rather interesting. 1000 years in the future in a nameless part of Japan. A world that seems to lack technology yet there is no evidence of a war wiping out technology. Already you know that the show has a mysterious past which unfortunately all gets shoved down your throat at episode 4. Although they did do a good job. The only hint of a dark past before that is the shows opening that takes place in 2011. A time when cantus first appeared. Now everyone has superhuman powers known as cantus. At the core cantus is some form of telekinetic power. All humans have this power. However there is another form of intelligent life and that is where the story gets even more interesting. Monster rats live outside of the village in large colonies ruled by a queen. Some monster rats are capable of speech and that is important later on. They are an oppressed species and bow down to humans accepting them as their gods. In the second half of the show the monster rats will show their true nature. The ending will absolutely blow you away. I stared at my TV for a solid 5 minutes just running through my head what had happened.

Warning: Many people will drop this show because of episode 8 or something around that. At this point in the show the characters are teenagers I believe and there are some gay scenes where guys are kissing. That is not a legitimate reason to drop this show. Please get past that and you should be able to enjoy the rest of it.
