Watching Berserk reminded me about some of the reasons why I love anime. This series is intellectual, dark, action packed, and emotionally powerful. It's also loosely based on Shakespeare's Macbeth. I love it when animes are based on a foundation of excellent literature, so I had to watch.

Griffith, leader of the band of the Hawks, is a noble soul, and the illustration of his character is handled excellently, where you really sense his inherent nobility, even in his posture. On top of this, his dialogue inspires some levels of fascination. He speaks with the sound of a true heart pursuing a noble dream.

Guts, the main character, has equal depth of illustration, and his action scenes in this series are some of the best I've seen. They weren't generic, they were unique. Gut's fighting style was exactly as Griffith described them; "as though you're always testing yourself to find your limits."

Yes, this was a great anime, I only wish that the amazing depth in illustration was also matched that of the characters themselves, their personal traits, and their individual relationships with one another. Also, even though the plot was fantastic, it started to spiral in a different direction from where my tastes and interests are concerned. This was the most disappointing factor for me, though it might not be the case for others, who might really like the direction it's heading.
