Btooom! (Anime) add (All reviews)
Aug 16, 2014
The only thing in BTOOOM! that makes it unique are the bombs. Seriously, it seemed really cool starting it. However, that's not enough to make a story shine on its own, and as the end reached nearer, I had hoped something would turn things around and make it not so predictable and disappointing. I wanted it to surprise me just once!! Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

First off, story: 4/10

Pretty simple. You read the summary on here, and it's basically just that. They fight to survive in a game that needs them to kill other people. The fanservice was incredibly annoying. I couldn't help but eye roll every time. There were a lot of flashbacks. They didn't hold back.

The pacing is fine, but the ending is pretty unsatisfying. They left you with something you probably already expected to happen. In fact, everything was so predictable here. I feel like the protagonist was a little bit of a gary-stu.

Art: 8/10

The art was pretty good, but not what I would call spectacular. I mean, Madhouse always does really nice close-ups of characters, and overall I think it was pretty consist. I was neutral towards the character designs. As for backgrounds: there wasn't anything too notable.

Sound: 5/10

I really enjoyed the opening. I found myself humming it while I tended to my cats. As for background music, I don't think it was too great. I can barely recall any.

The voice acting was tolerable. This goes for the subs, of course.

Character: 4/10

Dear lord. It's hard to begin on this. The protagonist is kinda a mess. He starts off as a self-entitled lazy guy but then when he gets on the island he's extremely selfless. He keeps saying he's not the same person and that he's changed after an experience, but 5 minutes later, he's back to how he was when he first landed on the island. Also, he's way too in shape for some lazy bum that plays video games all day. Seriously, I keep wanting to refer to this guy as a gary-stu. He's just so good for no reason. I could rant all day about this.

The girl, Himiko, was fine. The one thing that annoyed me was how she kept being seen as a sexual object. There was a lot of mention(and even showing) of rape happening. It was gross and I'll say it a hundred times and then some more. It didn't feel like they were trying to send a message out. It was like an excuse for more fanservice, and that's what makes it so gross. It wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't keep throwing it in your face. I'm sorry if you think that mentioning the rape scene is a spoiler, but I feel like people should be told beforehand because it made me cringe. I don't want anyone to be triggered or anything. This is my biggest issue with this anime.

All the other characters were okay. In my opinion, it wasn't that they were totally forgettable, it's that I wanted to forget some of them. I didn't like any of them. Plus, you only saw some once or twice. There was Taira, but they weren't being subtle with throwing him aside. They showed you backstory of characters who you didn't even know or see that many times.

Enjoyment: 4/10

I found myself eye-rolling a lot through this, but I did enjoy some things about it. I don't have anything to elaborate on here because that's all I have to say on the enjoyment section.

Overall: 4/10

I can't give it anything else but a 4. I look at this anime and I think: "Wow, this was probably created by a bunch of straight guys who have absolutely no lives whatsoever, and then put their desires within this anime." Even if that's not the case, it's the feeling I get.

It just tried too hard to be too many things in so little time, and by the time it reached halfway, I knew deep down it wouldn't get better. I don't like how this anime had so much sexism in it.

It finished without answering a lot of questions, but those questions probably have answers that are as predictable as everything else. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but if you like bombs, don't care much for story, or anything else, go watch this.
