I had heard a lot about Kill La Kill, so I expected great things. I watched the first episode and thought "this isn't for me". The story seemed cliche, I wasn't sold on the over the top art style and the amount of fanservice on offer was just too much to handle.

When the series was nearing completion, everyone was still talking about Kill La Kill, so I thought I would give it a second chance. After completing the second episode I was hooked.

What I realised about Kill La Kill is that it is unashamed of what it is, and fully embraces all of it's tropes. The story, whilst seemingly shallow at first glance, manages to put a fresh spin on a tale of revenge, often making fun of itself in the process. Humour is where Kill La Kill really shines, and helps to push this show over the edge in terms of how bonkers it can get.

The animation can sometimes be a little haphazard, but the loose style suits the feel of the show, and gives the action sequences energy. The show uses a limited colour palette most of the time, which almost gives it a manga come to life feel.

Yes there is plenty of fan service. But nudity isn't limited to just the female characters, or to any character. Pretty much everyone is naked at one point or another, and ends up becoming pivotal to the storyline, as strange as that sounds.

Overall, Kill La Kill took me by surprise, and I am glad I gave it another look. An energetic thrill ride with plenty of laughs, Kill La Kill may be one of the best anime series in recent history.
