STORY
The story is within itself VERY different from normal animes. It is set in the medieval era so things with knights and farmers and noblemen are all present. So you might think Spice and Wolf is a anime about a knight that meets a wolf or maybe a brave man setting out to do great things... NOPE its all about a peddler.. What does he do. He peddles he peddles so hard its crazy how hard he peddles his goods. Id even say its down right sexy how he manages the goods trade in this show. The show has its own economic system with its own market and form of money with its money values and all of it is explained in the show. Which surprisingly enough knowing how the economy and money system works really made me like the world its set in. It really gave me a basis on what the main character does for a living. This anime is VERY wordy so if you have the attention span of a fly or maybe you just like seeing blood gore and medieval sword play then you might want to look somewhere else. Also for those looking for a very gory or magical show such as trolls and goblins and of course body parts flying you wont find any...Of course the show does have a little bit of magic but you'll have to watch and find out. This is a love anime by the way but it does it VERY well.
ARTWORK
Well to me it fits the setting nicely. The people are all varied and the animation is as good as the show needs it to be. That and I personally love the medieval setting so for me I felt right at home. Although I have a slight issue with the way the main character Lawrence is drawn.. Its mostly due to his hair because it is gray and because of that I have trouble telling exactly how old he is. But besides that issue I freaking loved it.
CHARACTERS
Now I am very big on character development. Its the only thing I stress about in every show I watch. Now the two characters we are working with in Spice and Wolf are Lawrence and his partner Holo. They have a very interesting and good personality. There chemistry works very well with each other and I found myself saying "Awwww dat be so kawaii" That and you will get invested with the way characters sell things.. To the point where you will begin to understand the economy and business. I not only found myself enjoying the way the two characters just talked to each other and interacted but I loved how they would sell things and work with the cool economic system and get the most bang from there buck and turning profits. Something that sounds very boring but is very fun. So much fun I actually thought I wanted to become a traveling merchant one day.
OVERALL
If you have a open mind and love weird anime that do different things. If you don't mind love and wonderful trading. Watching deals go down before your very eyes to see how people plan to get there money back. If you dont mind a lack of violence and a lack of blood and gore and you like long wordy conversations with interesting characters then this is the anime for you!!!
