I suppose it's also because I could relate to the main female character. I was really shy in school and I had rumors about me and people who harassed me. I never really had friends or a "prince charming" like boyfriend, but it felt nice to be able to relate to a character so much. I'm so happy the anime was so much like the manga, so even though the anime is over, I can continue on with the manga as if I'm still watching the anime.
