School Days (2007 anime directed by Keitarou Motonaga)
*aimed at those who have seen the whole show*

Lets Begin with the barebones-
School Days is a visual novel that got adapted into an anime

Story- One of the most controversial stories out there,
(it’s as if it was written to make audience uncomfortable)
what more can i say you gotta give it to the screenplay
writer, it’s a ripper 10/10

Structuring- Excellent structuring making the viewer want
to watch the next episode despite the fact that they might
dislike it. If i were to draw a graph of ridiculousness it would
sky rocket 10/10

Sound- Now the music and sound effects are nothing special but touching in
some cases 8/10

Artwork and animation- I am not an expert in this field but it is of a
relatively good standard 8/10

Camera techniques and mise en scene- this is a mindblower of the
show, from start to finish the quality and finesse is superb 10/10

My thoughts:
I’m not sure where exactly to start. I guess I’ll start with how i felt.
Throughout most of the anime i wanted to throw my computer out
the window. The anime goes against a lot of what I believe in and
what I see as morally correct, which made me extremely uncomfortable.
I can truly understand why people dislike this anime so much.
This anime is quite ridiculous, but it has a lot of artistic value and stamina!
It is a brilliant story in the sense that there is nothing “good” about it, shall I
say “two negatives is a positive”.

My interpretation:
Ok so our main character is a young high school kid with his “desires”.
He goes after a girl who he never speaks to, Kotonoha. Next to him in his
class is Sekai who does show affection for our “hero”. Sekai realises that
Makoto likes Kotonoha so she gets them together as a couple. It is evident
that both Sekai and Makoto have something in common (they want something
out of their reach). Under Sekai’s greed she steals Makoto from Kotonoha.
Furthermore, Makoto ends up not finding Sekai as enough so he embarks
on a quest of “greed and lust”.
Although people interpret him as a “dickhead”, I see him as very confused.
An excellent example of this is when Makoto brushes away Sekai’s request of
dumping Kotonoha but he does so in a very indirect manner. Throughout the
rest of the series Makoto does not seem as a “devil” but quite unknown to
what he wants. Near the end he ends up with what he originally had (Kotonoha).
and now I must ask the people who have seen the show
“Is it Makoto who is at fault or is it Sekai? Both? Maybe”

Psychological and philosophical analysis(note I am not a Psychologist):
The characters both Makoto and Sekai are unknown to what they desire
in their lives and many other characters in the show are exaggerated to
emphasise psychological unstableness in adolescence.

Overall:
The show is controversial and it is an “acquired taste” for those who liked it.
I recommend a second or even third viewing of the anime. It is truly
unique!- 10/10
