Often I watch series because my friends tell "just try X, it has Y like your favorite Z" where X and Z were titles and Y was genre, plot, characters, art style, storytelling or many other things. Because it's quite common practice MAL have section "Recommendations". But it's difficult for now to find any anime like Monogatari series. Bakemonogatari was quite a shocker and divided audience on praisers and haters of this show. It was just unexpected for many that the story wasn't mainly based on action, romance or characters relationships. Episodes were full of word play, meaningless conversations about sexual themes and lolicon attitudes of Araragi Koyomi. But some viewers neglected this and focused on rescuing girls and fighting supernatural beings.

In Nisemonogatari there is simply no way to ignore fan service and ecchi dialogues any longer as the action quantity drops. Because of that sequel made full-of-fan-service impression although it just develops further something present in Bakemonogatari. Some scenes of sequel are very close to hentai and even lolicon. But as I tolerable to this I found no problem in completing and re-watching this show several times. Nisemonogatari is outstanding because of synergy of its story, art and sound.

Story is character-driven with postmodernist and abstract style. Nisio Isin - writer of Monogatari series ranobe - is remarkable for his breaking of fourth wall to create illusion of conscious characters. They can speak about anything - IT sector in Russia, pseudo philosophical problems, plans on future, life-long bond, someones past or underwear. They don't follow common sense or any rules and can do pretty much anything. They can reflect hours on meaningless things or make important decision in a second. This makes characters unpredictable in comparison to most of anime or literature characters.

Art is abstract and heavily used to tell the story. Captions on the road, street signs, a strand of hair to symbolize Araragi family - there are a lot of details which are incorporated in story and character design. Mind-blowing architecture, saturated colors, changing lightning conditions - it seems like artists don't wanted to draw same motionless background every frame. Some frames are heavily packed with information which make re-watching even more exciting.

Soundtrack covers several genres but mainly uses minimalistic sometimes multi-layered compositions. Sound perfectly fits the story and amplifies abstract feel of the series.

But main enjoyment of series is seeing thoughtful integration of story, art and soundtrack. I cannot imagine Nisemonogatari without any of this component altered or completely changed.
