There are a lot of low reviews saying the characters are stupid and annoying or uninteresting. I find it refreshing to have characters that aren't so over the top and set in their personalities that is makes no realistic sense. Nobody is so clear cut that they act the same way throughout the whole show no matter what is happening around them. I think that is what makes this anime so good.
There will be characters you like one second and then they do something so unexpectedly infuriating that you just pause the show and say "nope you are dead to me" but then they come back and admit they were being a jackass and seek forgiveness. Just like the real world.
Golden Time takes real college student personalities and adds a truly terrifying identity crisis. When you don't know who you were and what is expected of you do you move on and leave that behind you? Basically killing the person everyone knew. Or do you attempt to rebuild old relationships and become the person that was lost. If you do that what happens to the current version of yourself?
I don't think this show was designed to appeal to everyone. But if you do like it, I can see it jumping into your top 10 like it did mine.
Miyazaki has said that Anime as a whole is on the decline due to the industry being filled with otaku that don't actually know/interact with real people. Golden Time is, in my opinion, proof that there is still hope.
