Secound episode was nearly all flashback and is the preface to why the brothers are where they are now. though it doesnt happen at the same time the flashback happened in the manga, it remained faithful to it and didnt add/remove anything unessessary.
As a whole, overall these too episode compliment each other really well from a fast too a slow one. Regardless of modifications made to the story I am confident that it will remain to the manga in the long run, unlike the first FMA anime.
