Log Horizon is a story of being trapped within the world of Elder Tales, an MMO game. I watched the anime and read the light novels. Its protagonist is Shiroe, an enchanter with a wicked reputation. We follow him as he deals with the reality of being trapped in the game world. He meets a zany cast of characters as he tries to find a way back to the real world.

I thought it had a good premise and was well executed. It doesn't uplift anime or light novels as a medium but offered an adequate story of discovery and adventure for the audience. One of the weaknesses of Japanese anime and light novels is the overuse of the same tropes and cliches. They are present here but thankfully don't detract the fun from the story.

Log Horizon will undoubtedly be compared to 2012's hit series Sword Art Online. I consider Log Horizon to be the superior due to its more realistic portrayal of human psychology and the non-presence of blatant wish fulfillment.

Log Horizon doesn't suffer from many weaknesses but it does nothing to differentiate itself from what has been done before. As I am really fond of numerical values I give the first season of Log Horizon a 4/5.

P.S. The opening song Database was definitely one of the catchiest I've heard yet.
